On the occasion of Venice International Performance Art Week (10th to 17th December 2016), ALMA ZEVI is pleased to display a selection of performative video works by Miriam Austin and Juliana Cerqueira Leite, both of whom are included in the current exhibition at the gallery – Sculptors’ Drawings.
Cerqueira Leite’s performances explore the potential of the body and sequential gestures, investigating space and creating new configurations with a variety of materials and props. The core of Cerqueira Leite’s work addresses a self-awareness of the body, as well as the unconscious processes which manifest as our ‘self-image’. Her use of the body, both as an intuitive space and as a choreographed vehicle, creates a fluid yet highly disciplined means of artistic expression.
Austin’s videos present the fragility of the body, always weaving a parallel between natural elements and isolated body parts. Bodies might be covered with flowers, or fish scales, which are brought to life when shown together with, for example, a close-up of a breathing neck. The imagery that is created is both unexpected and sinister, beautiful and ephemeral, and often influenced by paganism, or other ancient cultures and rituals.
The screenings will run from 10th to 17th December 2016, during the gallery opening hours.
22nd October 2016 - 26th January 2017
